SHAD, SHAD SHAD!

Update as of 1/25 – The really big fish are in, from Highway 46 bridge to the Econ.  Fish bends and the faster current – deep.  The hook benders are out there – make sure your not using wimpy hooks – 18″ – 20″ fish reported being caught.  Looks like the season could last awhile this year.

If you need flies we have a great selection.

Update as of 1/20 – We are getting really good feedback from shad fishermen.  They are in from Lake Harney south to the Econ.  More of the bigger fish have come in – 15-17 inches reported.  We’ll try to keep an on going post.  Let us know how you are doing.

Update as of 1/18 – The shad are south of Lake Harney and bunched up at Highway 46 bridge – average size 2 pounds.  It’ Hot, Hot, Hot!

This is about the average size.

Who let the dogs out!  We received our first reports of shad on the St. John’s River, but not where.  We tried and tried to squeeze it out of a Guide – all we could get is east of Orlando – it looks like he wanted to keep it to himself for a while.  We’ll keep you posted – they are on the run and it should get better as the river recedes.

Come into the store and gear up with rod, reel, line(s) and leader(s).  And we are stocked up on the very best patterns of shad flies (tied in the shop).  Also, check out our sale rods.

Our Thursday night “Tying with a Guide” is a great time to come in and learn the patterns, tie with some instruction and learn some of the fishing techniques – bring a drink and a snack.

See you on the JOHN – the river that is.

Tying With a Guide

“Tying With A Guide”

Our local guide Capt. Scott MacCalla kicked off our Guide/Shop Program (different Guide or Shop personnel will work with you each Thursday) with such great success that we have changed the time and date to every Thursday night from 5:30PM to 7:30PM.  The club is open to everyone from beginner to advanced and the really good news is – no fee- just bring your tying tools, hooks and materials.  If you are missing some tools or vise we will be happy to loan them to you for the evening and please feel free to bring beverages and snack items if you would like.  So, come on in and learn some basics, pass along a tying tip or pick one up. How Far Will You Go To Test A Fly Pattern?

All tiers like to design new patterns and test them on the defined species.  But how far will you go to do this?  Cliff Rochester, Owner of Fishient – Just Add H2O and an excellent tier, tested some of his new Tiger Fish flies in a camp in Tanzania, Africa.  Yes a camp, on the Ruhidji River with hyena and lions roaring close by in the evenings.  The results, though, were spectacular as you can see.  The rod he was using was the new G-Loomis NRX – a 9 weight and he said “the performance was unbelievable!”

During his trip one of the boats in his party was attacked and dumped by a hippo with the boat driver thrown in the water – he lived to tell about it with his new nick name “Lucky.”  The trip is not for the faint of heart!
